In the 1870s, skipper Nathan Algren, a misanthropic ex-serviceman of the american language Civil war who will work for anyone, is hired by Americans who want remunerative contracts with the emperor butterfly of Japan to train the tike conscripts for the first standing majestic army in modern war using firearms. The purple Omura cabinet’s first precedency is to subjugate a revolt of diehard Samurai -hereditary warriors- who remain devoted to the sacred dynasty but reject the Westernizing policy and even refuse firearms. Yet when his ill-prepared victor force sets out too soon, their panic allows the sword-wielding samurai to crush them. Badly maimed Algren’s brave stand makes the samurai leader Katsumoto spare his life; once nursed to health he learns to know and esteem the old nipponese way, and participates as consultant in Katsumoto’s failed endeavour to save the Bushido tradition, but Omura gets repressing laws enacted- he must now choose to honor his trueness to one of the embittered sides when the difference returns to the battlefield…
